Cardinals have become much more common at my bird feeder. They love the warm weather & the sunflower seeds. They also enjoy the bird bath in my yard. (Actually, I find that the bird bath is becoming more popular than the feeder.) The sparrows, house finches, robins, & cardinals visit it frequently, & angrily peck at it when I forget to fill it. The only birds that almost never come to it are the common grackles. I’ve only seen a Blue jay once this season, which is odd; previous years they’ve been quite common. I know they’re around though, I’ve heard their noisy calling in the trees in my neighborhood. Blue jays aren’t the kindest birds, they’ve been known for killing the eggs, adults, & young of other bird species, particularly western bluebirds, & taking over their nests.

Wow, interesting! Has anyone else come across the same thing compared to this? I am curious where to find more responses on this matter…
We have lots of cardinals here. I haven’t seen many blue jays though. I’m kind of glad about that because we have so many song birds and I have seen them raiding nests and eating eggs on the half acre were we used to live.
As always, I appreciate your informative blog entries. The drawings are really nice and add a good touch. The birdbath is a special place for the birds! I have been photographing birds that are in a neighbor’s birdbath. I don’t have a birdbath here at my home but may get one. Thanks again for the wonderful post!

I’d love to see a Cardinal at our feeder. We see one perhaps every other summer. We do have a pair of Bluejays who hang around though.
